W.K. Patterson, Jacksonport, Arkansas, to Governor Harris Flanagin

Patterson informs Flanagin that the situation in northeast Arkansas is very bad and the people have been stripped of all their possessions. With the removal of the Confederate government from Little Rock, lawlessness prevails in the northern half of the state. Efforts made by Patterson and other Confederate officers to bring deserters and absentees back into the army have failed. He writes that the men refuse to leave their families unprotected and he wishes to organize companies of these men and allow them to remain in the area. Kie Oldham collection
