W.A. Bevens, Batesville, Arkansas, to Governor Harris Flanagin

Bevens requests payment be given to four companies of men who were called up by the state early in the war. The Confederate authorities refuse to pay them because they were considered state militia, and the state authorities refuse to pay them because they claim they were raised illegally. Bevens disagrees with this claim and states that it is an injustice to the men who enlisted voluntarily and served faithfully and cheerfully to defend their state. Kie Oldham collection
