SMC (Small Manuscript Collection) refers to manuscript collections that have one or only a few items and are not maintained as single collections. These small collections are placed together in boxes with other separate small collections and microfilmed for public use. They include letters, legal documents, diaries, ledgers, and other manuscript items.

To search the SMC database try to use more common names and subjects such as LITTLE ROCK, or CIVIL WAR. A name search is also possible, such as JONES, MARY.

While access to many of these items is limited to our research room, photocopies can be requested by filling out the Photocopy Order Form with the information on the materials you want, then mailing it and a check for the photocopy fee to: Arkansas History Commission, One Capitol Mall, Little Rock, Arkansas 72201. If you are unsure how many pages the photocopy order will be, please send an email to, and we will be able to give you the correct number of pages to order.
