The Arkansas History Commission has been awarded a grant from the Arkansas Humanities Council, Dr. Wendy Richter, director of the History Commission, announced today. The purpose of the Arkansas Humanities Council is to promote understanding, appreciation, and use of the humanities in Arkansas. To achieve its purpose, the council awards grants through a competitive application process to nonprofit groups and organizations so they can plan, conduct, and evaluate projects in the humanities for Arkansas citizens.
With this grant, the State Archives will make available on the web significant documents, photographs, maps, broadsides, and three-dimensional objects representative of various time periods in Arkansas history. “Documenting Arkansas” will be an Arkansas-specific webpage similar to the highly acclaimed “American Memory” project at the Library of Congress. The History Commission’s archival staff, with guidance from other humanities scholars, will choose items from the Commission’s collections for placement on the webpage, create digital images, develop the narrative, and prepare a complete transcription of each document (where applicable).
