Arkansas as a part of the Confederacy was a battleground during the Civil
War, but after the Federals took control of the Mississippi and Arkansas
Rivers and occupied Little Rock in 1863, the Union military power dominated
most of the state except for the southwest region. Helena, which was
captured in 1862, became an important Union base of operations, as did
DeValls Bluff on the White River. A Unionist state government was set up in
Little Rock in 1864. Included in this grouping are images of Union soldiers
and sites.
