Since the first director was hired in 1911, the Arkansas History Commission
has collected portraits and paintings related to Arkansas and its people
through donations from private individuals. Currently, all portraits owned
by the AHC are on display (if not on temporary loan for exhibit elsewhere)
in the Portrait Gallery in our quarters in one of five categories:
Territorial Days, Early Statehood, Civil War, Reconstruction and Turn of the
Century and Twentieth Century. Together, the portraits and paintings in the
AHC Portrait Gallery compose one of the most extensive collections of
Arkansas' art heritage.
