Until the American Legion was founded following the First World War, the
most important organization of former soldiers in Arkansas and the South was
the United Confederate Veterans. On May 15-18, 1911, the city of Little
Rock was host to 106,000 visitors and old soldiers who attended the national
reunion of the UCV. It was the largest popular gathering in the history of
the city up to that time.
