How to Research

State Government Records

The Arkansas History Commission has records of many state agencies, departments, boards, and commissions. The materials contained in these collections consist of correspondence, minutes, proceedings, and reports that were generated by the day-to-day work of Arkansas government. Though the years included are different for each state entity, the records as a whole span Arkansas's history from its territorial days to the late twentieth century. Some of the agencies and departments for which there is material are the Bank Department, Attorney General's office, State Land Commissioner, Soil Conservation District, State Council of Defense, Railroad Commission, Correction Department, and the State Hospital. The types of records found include Arkansas Territorial Superior Court records, letter books of correspondence of nineteenth century governors, ledgers of trademarks and labels, Highway Commission audits, and the 1986 Sesquicentennial Commission Collection. Access to this material may be gained through the catalog, inventories and finding aids available in our research room.
